RUSSIAN LACQUER BOXES
Varnish handicraft appeared in Russia in 1795. Merchant Korobov brought it from Germany. After he had got aquatinted with varnish handicraft in Brownshveig, he began making the familiar things in Danilkovo (the part of Fedoskino) near Moscow.
Russian masters began to use their own technology of making varnish boxes from papier-mache. Miniatures were painted in oil, using classical style. Fedoskino"s masters often painted on the shining back ground (golden and silver dust, mother-of-pearl when making expensive things) instead of traditional ground. The most traditional pictures are the topics of village life: villages views, tea-drinking, fairy-tales, famous Fedoskino"s troika (three horses harnessed abreast) and also the views of farmsteads and Moscow Kremlin.
